چکیده

Squill [Urginea maritima (L.) Baker, Liliaceae] is a native medicinal and ornamental plant from the Mediterranean area. The bulbs were an ancient source of rodenticide products replaced later on by warfarin and modern anticoagulant raticides. Since rats have developed resistance to such products there is now renewed interest in the species. In the 1950s, attempts were made in the United States to introduce this new crop for arid lands. A collection of bulbs are still maintained at Gentry Experimental Farm, Murrieta, California. Some limitations concerning variability in toxicity were previously discussed (Verbiscar et al. 1986a; Gentry et al. 1987). Scilliroside, a high toxicity bufadienolide glycoside, is the main active principle. Other glycosides and aglycones have also been isolated from the bulb (Verbiscar et al. 1986b). We tested this plant in our research program to screen botanicals for insecticidal activity at “Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo Agroalimentario” in Murcia, Spain. In Spain squill is a wild plant of coastal areas (Fig. 1). Ethanolic extracts of bulbs have been active against stored product pests (Pascual-Villalobos and Fernández 1999), although such anti-insect effects could not be attributed to specific compounds in that study. The objective of this work was to test pure bufadienolides isolated from U. maritima.

Bufadienolides and a new lignan from the bulbs of Urginea maritima.

Thirty three compounds were obtained from the bulbs of Urginea maritima (Liliaceae). The compounds were identified by means of fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (FAB-MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), (13C-NMR), nuclear overhauser effects (NOE) and two dimensional (2D) NMR. Ten of them were new natural compounds. Nine were bufadienolides and only one was lignan in these compounds.

Determination of Antioxidant Activities of Different Urginea maritima (L.) Baker Plant Extracts

The subject handled in this study is the determination of antioxidant activities of extracts obtained from the Urginea maritima (L.) Baker plant’s leaves and tubers. Extractions which were obtained using various solvents as methanol, ethanol, acetone and benzine. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined using β-karotene-linoleic acid system. Moreover, the free radica...

Cardiac glycoside poisoning in sheep caused by Urginea physodes (Jacq.) Bak. and the isolated physodine A.

Urginea physodes (Jacq.) Bak., a species closely related to or possibly synonymous with U. pusilla, is described and its distribution given. Four bufadienolides were isolated from U. physodes and the approximated LD50 and cumulative effect of some of them determined in guinea pigs. The most toxic one proved to be mildly cumulative. Typical signs of acute cardiac glycoside poisoning, involving t...

Anti-gastric cancer activity in three-dimensional tumor spheroids of bufadienolides.

Multicellular spheroids of cancer cells have been increasingly used to screen anti-tumor compounds, owing to their in vivo like microenvironment and structure as well as compatibility to high-throughput/high-content screening. Here we report the potency and efficacy of a family of bufadienolides to inhibit the growth of gastric cancer cell line HGC-27 in three-dimensional (3D) spheroidal models...
